National Laboratory of Scientific Research in Esports

National Laboratory of Scientific Research in Esports

The Esports Lab at the Faculty of Human Kinetics, at the University of Lisbon, is dedicated to pioneering research in the multifaceted world of Esports. Our work delves into the dynamic interplay of electronic sports and gaming with various societal dimensions, making significant contributions to both academic comprehension and practical applications within the sports management field. Our research englobes a wide range of critical areas. We explore the connection between esports and the Olympic movement, focusing on the promotion of social values such as teamwork, discipline, and fair play. Our studies investigate how these values can be integrated and emphasized within the esports community. Additionally, we address significant issues such as toxic behaviours within online gaming communities and harmful consumption practices, including smurfing and excessive spending, aiming to identify and propose solutions to mitigate these negative aspects of esports culture. We also analyze the organization, management, and impact of esports events, including examining sponsorship strategies and their effectiveness in enhancing brand engagement and loyalty among esports fans. Moreover, we are at the forefront of exploring how cutting-edge technologies, such as blockchain, can revolutionize fan engagement and loyalty. Our research investigates the potential of these technologies to create more secure, transparent, and interactive experiences for esports audiences. Our interdisciplinary team of researchers, academics, and industry experts brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to our projects. By studying these diverse aspects of esports, we aim to contribute valuable insights that support the growth and sustainability of the industry.
